Audio Interview
I recently did an in-depth audio interview with Jim "Smitty" Smith from the Diesel Crew, and I think you'll really enjoy it. We covered a ton of topics, but if you've read my recent articles (Modified 5x5 Squat Program, Bulletproof Knees, High Performance Core Training, etc.) Smitty asked a ton of questions to help better understand the concepts I've outlined there.
Here's the link: Mike Robertson Audio Interview with Smitty from the Diesel Crew
The interview is just over 30 minutes, so it can definitely help kill some time at work! As well, be sure to check out Smittys' site - they are doing some great things over at Diesel Crew, and he's one of the most genuinely nice guys I know in the business.

Training Tip:
Try the hip extension test to see if your glutes are firing
The hip extension test is a simple way to determine how well your posterior chain is functioning. Lay face down on a table with your ankles hanging off the edge. You will either have to video tape yourself or have someone watch you. Raise one leg a few inches off the table; if the arch in your back increases or if your knee flexes (bends) then your glutes are not working properly. Try stretching your hip flexors and hamstrings, while adding in specific glute work to improve motor recruitment and control.
As well, if you want more tests just like this one, be sure to check out the "Building the Efficient Athlete" DVD series when it's released in a few months!
Nutrition Tip:
Omega-3 Snacks
by Dr. John Berardi
Once you’re splitting up your fats correctly (about 1/3 of your fat intake coming from each of the three types of fat), your next goal should be to balance out your omega 6: omega 3 ratio. Do this and you’re arteries will be jumping for joy and they’ll have less body fat around them to impede their jump height.
While most of you probably already know that the omega 6: omega 3 balance is critical, I’m sure many of you are wondering in you can balance out the 6:3 ratio without having to pour another tablespoon of flaxseed oil down the gullet?
How about trying some pumpkin seeds or flaxseeds? Pumpkin seeds provide
a 2:1 ratio of omega 6 fatty acids to omega 3 fatty acids, increasing the
EFA content of your diet while putting your fat intake back in balance.
Also, adding flaxseeds to your diet is a good idea. Grind these seeds up
in a coffee grinder and add to your meals. Flaxseeds provide fiber, protein,
and a 3:1 ratio of omega 3: omega 6 fatty acids. Your arteries will thank
you.

Product Review: Ultimate Off-Season Training Manual
When Eric first sent me this article over a year ago, I was simply blown away by the time and effort he'd put into it. While some of the concepts were foreign to me, he had laid out a strategic and systematized approach to improving athletic performance.
Now, over a full year later (and with the addition of about a hundred or so pages!), Eric has produced what I consider to be the MOST COMPLETE off-season training resource at your disposal. Simply put, Eric delves into every aspect of training including strength, power, mobilty and conditioning, as well as how they should be systematically implemented over the course of the off-season. If that isn't good enough, he even gives you 30 WEEKS OF SAMPLE PROGRAMMING to help you better understand his concepts.
If you're an athlete or coach who is serious about improving performance, the only thing worse than not having this manual yourself is if your competition was smart enough to pick up a copy!

Success Stories:
Every now and then I want to take a second to congratulate people who have trained with me, either in the past or present. With a summer full of strength-related events, here are a few people I wanted to congratulate:
Shaun Kelley
Shaun Kelley is one of my online training clients, and in his recent Strongman event, Shaun took first place in his weight class. I've even got a pic below of Shaun wrestling with some Atlas Stones. Congrats Shaun!
Joni Hockett
Joni is a client of Custom Fitness/Custom Athletics, and in her first year of figure competition she took 1st place in not one but TWO regional level shows! Beyond that, Joni went to Nationals and took eighth place overall in the Masters division. Add on top of this that she's a mother of four and you understand why I'm so proud of Joni!
Melanie Benzinger
Melanie was a training client of mine while I was in Ft. Wayne, and she may be the client I'm most proud of. Melanie totally overhauled her life, and in her first figure competition this past July she took 2nd in her class! Melanie has literally transformed her life and her body before my very eyes. Congrats Mel!
